History

In the 1866 Proceedings of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria the second Overture from the Presbytery of Melbourne recommended that the congregations at Sale, Tarraville, and Stratford, be detached from the Presbytery of Melbourne, and formed into a separate presbytery, to be called the Presbytery of Gippsland. On the motion of the Rev C Moir, seconded by the Rev W S Login, it was agreed that the Congregations at Sale, Tarraville, and Stratford, be detached from the Presbytery of Melbourne, and formed into a separate presbytery, to be called the Presbytery of Gippsland.

In a major reorganisation at the General Assembly meeting of 3 October 1978 it was decided to unite the Presbytery of Gippsland with the Presbytery of Latrobe Valley to be known as the Presbytery of Latrobe Valley. At that time the Presbytery of Gippsland consisted of the charges of Bairnsdale, Maffra, Omeo/Swifts Creek, Orbost, Sale/Rosedale, Stratford and Yarram. Whilst the Presbytery of Latrobe Valley consisted of Drouin, Leongatha, Loch/Poowong, Moe/Yallourn, Morwell, Traralgon and Warragul.

At the 7 October 1985 General Assembly it was agreed to revert the name of the presbytery to the Presbytery of Gippsland.
