At the 15 Nov 1887 General Assembly meeting the Overture was approved to divide the Presbytery of Melbourne into two Presbyteries to be designated respectively, the Presbytery of Melbourne North and the Presbytery of Melbourne South. Hobson’s Bay and the River Yarra the boundary line between the two new Presbyteries. The division to take effect from the beginning of December 1887.

In 1888, the Presbytery of Melbourne South consisted of the congregations of: Camberwell, Cranbourne, Elsternwick, Hawthorn, Kew, Oakleigh, Prahran, Port Melbourne, South Melbourne—Clarendon Street, South Melbourne Dorcas Street, St. Kilda East, Warragul and Dandenong.

At the 18 Oct 1960 General Assembly meeting the Dissolution of the Presbytery of Melbourne South was approved by the transference of:

(a)The parishes of Balaclava, Bentleigh, Black Rock, Brighton, Brighton Beach, Caulfield (St. Giles’), Caulfield (St. Stephen’s), Elsternwick, Elwood, Gardenvale, Gardenvale East, Glenhuntly, Hampton, Highett, Moorabbin, Ormond, Port Melbourne, Sandringham, St. Kilda, St. Kilda East, South Melbourne, and the Home Mission Stations of Beaumaris, Bentleigh East, and Brighton East to the Presbytery of Melbourne East.

(b)The parishes of Chelsea, Cheltenham, Mentone, Mordialloc, and the Home Mission Station of Edithvale to the Presbytery of Flinders.

These changes came into effect from 1 March 1961.
